James W. "Jim" Riggs

James W. “Jim” Riggs, 87, of Winchester passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, at the Jacksonville Memorial Hospital. He was born May 27, 1936, in Casper, WY. Jim was the son of Richard R. Dick” and Margaret Trumble Riggs. Jim married Linda Sue Sparks, July 19, 1957, in Pittsfield. Surviving is wife, Sue Riggs of Winchester; children, Becky (Les) Stevens of Jacksonville (grandsons, Matthew (Karen) Rueter (great granddaughters, Lanie and Mae Rueter) of Winchester and Curtis (Alaina) Rueter (great granddaughters, Jaidyn and Kynlee Rueter) of Woodson, Bill (Joyce) Riggs of Winchester, Sarah Burton of Jacksonville, and Sam (Gary) Isaacs of Pleasant Plains (grandson, Tyler (Megan) Isaacs, (great granddaughter, Harper Isaacs) of Monticello, granddaughter, Kristi (Colin) Slagle (great granddaughter, Ciana Slagle) of Woodson; and siblings, Ted (Donna) McDonald of Carl Junction, MO, and Eva Jo McLaughlin of Winchester. Preceding in death were parents, Dick, and Margaret Riggs; stepmother, Jessie Coultas Riggs; brother, John Jack Riggs; and sister, Betty Corson Darlington. Jim was a member of the First Christian Church of South Jacksonville where he was baptized April 21, 2019. He was so proud to be apart of his grandson’s baptism, more recently. Jim retired from the Alsey Refractories after 53 years of employment. He was a Shriner and a Mason. Jim often went on vacations to different islands where he enjoyed scuba diving. He enjoyed trap shooting competitions and was known to be a great shot. Jim also enjoyed horseback riding, especially in Wyoming with his family. He loved spending time at the cabin outside Alsey. He walked every day for exercise trying to get more miles than other family members. Hot, cold, rain or snow he was sure to get his walk in each day. His greatest joy was spending time with his family; especially the “Sunday Night Supper Club” where all his family gathered every Sunday for dinner. A celebration of life gathering will be held Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023, starting at 4:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in South Jacksonville with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. Following the prayer service, the family invites you to enjoy fellowship with family and friends in the church where hors d’oeuvres will be served.
