Donald is survived by four brothers and one sister, John Albert Whewell of South Jacksonville, Gary James (wife, Peggy) Whewell of rural Murrayville, Joyce Bernice Griffeth of South Jacksonville, G. Edward Whewell of St. Louis, MO, and Larry R. (wife, Barb) Whewell of South Jacksonville; uncle, James McGrath of Springfield; uncle and aunt, Gerald and Pat McGrath of Scottsdale, AZ; many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephew, and cousins. Special thanks to niece and nephews, Julie, Terry and Todd Whewell, and Tim Newman who all dedicated themselves to caring for Donald. He farmed his great grandfather’s farm in Scott County. He also had a custom hay baling service at that time. Donald grew up on a farm in Buckhorn, south of Jacksonville. He attended Buckhorn School, a one room schoolhouse, riding his horse “Black” to and from school. He played baseball. He attended Jacksonville High School. In his earlier years, Donald’s favorite time was spent coon hunting with his dog, Blue and playing cards. He enjoyed TV westerns, country music shows, truck rides, and family parties. After retiring, he liked sitting outside, listening to the sound of tractors working in the fields, the cows with new born calves in the pasture, and the sound of his neighbors in their trucks going by. Most of all, Donald loved to laugh and joke with his nephews, nieces, and old friends. He was an avid Cardinal baseball fan. Donald was a member of the Saint Mark’s Catholic Church in Winchester. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at the Daws Family Funeral Home in Winchester with interment in the Winchester City Cemetery.
