Earl K Carriger

May 2, 1933 - December 25, 2016

Earl Keith Carriger, 83, of Quincy passed away Christmas evening, 2016, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, accompanied by his beloved cousin, Darrell Howard. He was born May 2, 1933, in Alsey, the son of Leon and Lillian (McGuire) Carriger. He married Alice Klein in 1961. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann (Paul) Verderber of Bakersfield, CA and two granddaughters, Alice Verderber of New York, NY and Eliza Verderber of Los Angeles, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Lillian (McGuire) Carriger, stepmother Eva Carriger, brothers, Richard (Jackie) Carriger and Muriel (Wanda) Carriger. Earl was raised in Alsey and graduated from Winchester Community High School in 1951 where he played basketball, baseball, and was a member of the F.F.A. After serving in the United States Air Force, he moved to Rantoul to work at Chanute Air Force Base as an instructor. When a career move took him to Jacksonville, he took pride in tending to his farm near Alsey. He later returned to Rantoul and worked at Anderson Windows until his retirement. There was nothing Earl liked more than driving his car. He took road trips with his daughter all across the country. He continued the tradition by driving his granddaughters to see his farm when they would visit. Earl also enjoyed coin collecting and held an extensive collection that he loved to share with his family. His team was the Cardinals and if he wasn’t taking Mary Ann to a game, he would be sure to know the score and who they were up against. He will be remembered for his kind heart and extremely generous spirit which he shared with his extended family and community. Earl spent his last years at the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy, where the dutiful staff provided exceptional care. Carol Lindsey offered personal attention and assistance to him, taking him on car rides. Her friendship and care is immeasurable and she is greatly treasured. Cousin Darrell always made Earl a priority by visiting often, which always brightened his day. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 29th, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Winchester with interment in the Bowers Cemetery near Alsey. Rev. Mark A. Schulte will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 28th at Daws Family Funeral Home, Winchester.
