Grace Ellen Likes Ellison
January 20, 1919 - October 30, 2012
Grace Ellen Likes Ellison, 93, of Bluffs passed away Tuesday October 30, 2012 at her home in Bluffs. She was born January 20, 1919, the third eldest of six children to Ray Edward and Ora Bertha Husband Likes at the family farm home in the Oxville community of Scott County. Her father died in 1931 at age 37 and her mother in 1946 at age 51. She married Robert Major “Maj” Ellison, a Greene County native, November 27, 1936 in Jerseyville, Illinois. He preceded her in death February 23, 2000. They had celebrated 63 years of marriage. She is survived by her daughter Roberta Lee Ellison Barnett (husband Fred E.) of rural Bluffs; grandchildren Michael Barnett (wife, Kathleen) of Gilbert, Arizona, Melissa Barnett Carr (husband Christopher) of Arcadia, California; great grandchildren Steven Barnett and Samuel Barnett of Gilbert, Arizona, Myles Carr and Malia Grace Carr of Arcadia, California. Also surviving are nine nieces and eight nephews and their descendants. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters Arthur Likes, Henry Likes, Danny Likes, Marie Leib, and Ola Likes. During World War II while her husband served in the United States Navy, stationed at Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island, Washington and Attu in the Aleutian Island Chain, the family resided in Anacortes, Washington. At the end of the war they returned to Illinois and shortly thereafter began farming. She worked at the side of her husband tending the grain and livestock farm until his retirement in 1973. In 1987 they moved to the village of Bluffs. Early in life she was an active member of the Oxville United Methodist Church; in 1971 she placed her membership at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Meredosia and most recently Beardstown. She was promoted from Oxville School in 1933 and graduated from Bluffs High School in 1937. She has pleasant memories of employment, decades ago, by Hunt’s Cleaners in Anacortes, Washington and by The Old Drugstore and Placke’s in Bluffs. She played the piano and organ by ear, enjoyed songs with beautiful melodies and wholesome lyrics, loved the Lawrence Welk Show from its beginning to the present day syndication and always maintained a large colorful flower garden on the farm. She was devoted to a quiet life enriched by her home, family, friends and faith. Memorials may be offered to Beardstown Kingdom Hall, Hillcrest Cemetery, or Memorial Home Services-Hospice.
