Lee "Shug" A. Wells

Lee A. “Shug” Wells, 102, of Jacksonville and formerly of Alsey passed away Monday, Dec. 22, 2014 at the Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born April 27, 1912 in Greene County, the son of Norman L. and Tunie Smith Wells. He married Helen Carlton Jan. 12, 1935. She preceded him in death May 25, 1975. Lee married Goldie Carlton Jan. 9, 1976 and she preceded him in death April 5, 2000. Surviving is a granddaughter, Cynthia (David) Bettis of Jacksonville; great grandchildren, Samantha and Joshua Lee Bettis; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Lee was preceded in death by his only child, Doris Smith; brother, Charles Wells; and sisters, Goldie Wilson, Della Haney, Alma Day, Daisy Haney, and Nettie Doyle. Lee was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church near Alsey. He farmed most of his life in Scott County. He retired from the Roodhouse Envelope Company in 1976 after working there for several years. He loved to hunt, especially “coon” hunt with his favorite dog, Jack. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014 at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with interment in the Bowers Cemetery near Alsey. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Daws Family Funeral Home in Winchester.
