Phyllis M. Rhodes

Phyllis M. Engel Rhodes, 87, of Winchester passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at the Heritage Health Nursing Home in Jacksonville. She was born, Aug. 31, 1934, in Beecher City, the daughter of Ralph and Wilma Hobson Engel. Phyllis married Alfred Rhodes, April 18, 1963, in Sitka, Alaska. He preceded her in death, May 5, 2007. Surviving are her daughters, Jenny Rhodes, and Julia (David) DeGroot all of Winchester; grandchild, Hayden Shull of Winchester; brother, Butch (Glenda) Engel of Energy; sister, Shirley Lawson of Winchester; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Engel of Decatur. She was preceded in death by brother, Gerhrig Engel; sister, Sharon (Dominic) Grieco; and brother-in-law, Ken Lawson. Phyllis was a teacher for 36 years; 7 years in Springfield, 5 years in Sitka, Alaska, 2 years in Pearl, and 22 years in Winchester. She was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Winchester. Phyllis enjoyed staying very active in several organizations such as the Delta Kappa Gamma, LWML church group, Home Extension, quilt and book clubs in Winchester, and the Crisis Center in Jacksonville. She also enjoyed many hobbies such a German lace making, gardening, and all sorts of crafting. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2022, at the Christ Lutheran Church in Winchester with interment in the Winchester City Cemetery. The family will meet friends Friday, April 1, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Christ Lutheran Church or Delta Kappa Gamma.
