Virginia Mae McLaughlin Norman Likes, age 91 of Winchester, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2013. She was born at home near Winchester and Glasgow. She was born on January 23, 1922 to the late Herbert Adam McLaughlin and Lucille Fry. Virginia attended the country schools of Zion Neck and Sugar Grove. Virginia was in the 1939 graduating class of Winchester High School. Virginia is survived by her 2 daughters, Linda Kay Kehart (husband Mike J) of Decatur and Jean Ann Mies (husband Edward) of Loami. Virginia has 5 grandchildren: Elizabeth Kehart (husband Jeff ) Cosgrove of Arizona; Melissa Kehart of Decatur; Anna Mies (husband Bill) Richie of New Berlin, IL; Ted (wife Julie) Mies of Waverly, IL; Jonathan Mies of Loami, IL. 8 great grandchildren: Madison, Morgan and Aidan Cosgrove; Calyssa, Dain and Eva Mae Richie; and Samantha and Amber Mies. She is also survived by a brother Harold Dean McLaughlin. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Edward Russell; a brother, Herbert Raymond McLaughlin; her first husband and father of daughters, Edwin Russell Norman; and her second husband, Henry Carl Likes. She was an active member in the community and served as a volunteer for Passavant Hospital for 15 years, Winchester Bread of Love, picnics of Glasgow and Bluffs, 4-H Leader of Winchester Workers, and the Scott County Nursing home. Virginia also served on the board for the Red Cross and chaired the Scott County Woman’s club. She was an active member of the Scott County Homemakers Extension Association for 65 years and served as the District Director to the State Board. She has also been a proud member of the Lady Landowners of Western Illinois and Farm Bureau. She was also a member of the Scott County Historical Society (charter member), Eastern Star, Bluffs American Legion Auxiliary, Scott County Fair, and Prairie Council on Aging. Since 1940, Virginia has been a member of the First Christian Church of Winchester. Virginia was employed as a bookkeeper for the Fred Evans Furniture store, Myers Brothers Department Store in Jacksonville, secretary for Sheriff Lloyd Martin and tax collector of Scott County. She worked for the Secretary of State and the comptroller office in Springfield. She also enjoyed years of field and livestock farming. She continued to manage her farm bookkeeping until age 90. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, sewing, cooking, and canning. She kept busy following grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events. She enjoyed Cardinal’s baseball, playing cards and Bunco with friends. The family wishes to thank all of those who made life in a small community so rewarding for Virginia and family. Donations may be made to the Scott County Fair, Jacksonville Saint’s Special Olympic team or charity of donor’s choice Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Daws Family Funeral Home in Winchester with interment at the Winchester City Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday with the family meeting friends from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Scott County Fair, Jacksonville Saint’s Special Olympic team or donor’s choice.
